Mezzosopraan Leonie van Rheden studeerde aan de conservatoria van Arnhem en Utrecht en was ensemblelid bij het Aalto Musiktheater in Essen, Duitsland. De rollen die zij daar zong waren o.a. Sméraldine (L’amour des trois Oranges), Zweite Elfe en Küchenjunge (Rusalka), Flora Bervoix (La Traviata), Dritte Magd (Elektra) en Un Pastore (Tosca). Op het Richard Strauss Festival in Garmisch-Partenkirchen zong zij ook de rol van Dritte Magd in Elektra.

Leonie maakte haar debuut bij de Nederlandse Reisopera als Dryade in Ariadne auf Naxos (2016) en kwam later terug voor de rol van Olga in de pocketversie van Jevgeni Onegin (2019). Eerder in 2019 maakte Leonie haar debuut bij De Nationale Opera te Amsterdam, als Miep Meermans, in de famillievoorstelling De Jongen die te snel groeide. Daarna volgde het Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, waar Leonie 5. Mädchen in Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny vertolkte. Diezelfde productie zou in maart 2020 in première gaan bij De Nationale Opera, maar werd helaas geannuleerd wegens COVID-19. Daarnaast zou Leonie in 2020 haar debuut maken bij Opera Zuid als Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, deze productie is doorgeschoven naar een ander seizoen.

Andere rollen die Leonie vertolkte zijn Dido (Dido & Aeneas), Bianca (The Rape of Lucretia), Miss Jessel (The Turn of the Screw), Ismene & Iokaste (STYX) en Zweite Dame (Die Zauberflöte).

Ze nam deel aan masterclasses van o.a.: Rudolf Jansen, Roland Hermann, Ed Spanjaard, Roberta Alexander, Jard van Nes en Barbara Hannigan. 

Leonie werkte samen met dirigenten als Markus Stenz, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Antonino Fogliani, Marcus Merkel, Tomáš Netopil, Yannis Pouspourikas, Giuseppe Finzi, Georg Fritzsch, Gerrit Prieβnitz, Giuliano Carella, Jules van Hessen en Antonello Manacorda.

Op het gebied van concert en oratorium zong Leonie 1. Alt en Mulier Samaritana in Mahler’s Symphonie der Tausend, Alt solist in Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, Händel’s Messiah en Bach’s Matthäuspassion.

The same production would have had its premiere in March 2020, at the Dutch National Opera, if it wasn’t for COVID-19. After that Leonie woud have made her debut at Opera Zuid in the role of Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, this production is postponed to a new season.
